Helping A Lost Pet Get Back Home
What to do if you find a lost pet?
The first thing you should do is call your local animal control officer. Do not put yourself in harm's way.
If you are able to contain the pet, approach them slowly and cautiously. You can use canned food to coax them into your backyard or on a leash, ideally for a dog, or for cats in a carrier or a box with holes. Even a room in your house, if it's available.
The next thing to do would be to check for an ID. If they have an ID or a tag, please give their owner a call. They're probably worried and looking for them.
You can also file a found report with your local animal shelter. The owner will probably give them a call, looking for their pet. You can have them scanned for a microchip at your local shelter, animal clinic, or Kindred Animal Hospital.
Another step is to post a picture on neighborhood sites, Facebook, or any social media that you have available.
